HORNBY AND DENMAN ISLANDS

Known as the Hawaii of the Northwest, Hornby Island is two ferry rides away from Vancouver Island,  one hour’s drive north of Nanaimo. Vancouver is 140 kilometers away as the crow flies.

The permanent population of Hornby Island is about 900, but in the summer months it swells to 5000 with holiday visitors. A large number of artists in all media from music, visual arts and theater make their living with their art, and the surrounding waters offer good fishing, whale watching, and excellent swimming due to the shallow waters and numerous sandy beaches.

Denman is also a center for crafts but much less a draw for tourism. Being only a short ferry ride from Vancouver island, there is a large commuter population , making Denman island more of a bedroom community than is Hornby.
